Move Money Between Envelopes

Plans change mid-month, and that’s expected. If one envelope runs low and another has more than it needs, you can rebalance by shifting allocated money between them, without touching your accounts or recording any transactions.

How Moving Money Works

Moniqo doesn’t have a single “transfer” button for envelopes. Instead, you move money between two envelopes by adjusting their allocated amounts individually:

Decrease the allocated amount on the envelope you’re taking money from.
Increase the allocated amount on the envelope you’re adding money to, by the same amount.

Because both changes go through the same Modify form used for funding an envelope, the two actions together behave like a transfer, even though there’s no dedicated transfer feature under the hood.

Steps

Open the Envelopes page and select Modify on the envelope you want to move money out of.
Lower its allocated amount by the amount you’re moving. Note that you can’t reduce it below what’s already been spent from that envelope.
Select Save, then open the envelope you want to move money into and select Modify on it.
Raise its allocated amount by the same amount.
Select Save.

Notes

Moving money this way doesn’t create any transaction history; it only changes each envelope’s allocated amount. Your transaction records stay exactly as they are.
Moniqo never blocks an envelope from going overspent while you sort this out. You can record transactions against an envelope that’s already over its allocation, and cover it with a transfer whenever you get to it.

Tips

Check an envelope’s remaining balance before pulling from it: moving money out of an envelope that’s already nearly spent will push it into overspent territory.
If you find yourself rebalancing the same two envelopes every month, it’s often a sign one of them is under-allocated. Consider adjusting their usual funding amounts instead. See Fund an Envelope.
