Archive an Envelope
Retire an envelope you no longer need without losing its history.
Archive an Envelope
You can restructure your envelopes at any time: rename them, stop using them, or retire ones you no longer need. Archiving is the everyday way to do that: it removes an envelope from your active list without erasing anything it’s already been used for.

How Archiving Works
When you archive an envelope:
- It disappears from your active Envelopes list, so it no longer clutters your day-to-day view or dashboard totals.
- If it has any transaction history, that history is preserved: past transactions and reports that reference it remain fully intact. You can bring it back into view at any time using the Show archived toggle on the Envelopes page (see Manage Envelopes).
- If it has never had any transactions recorded against it, there’s nothing to preserve, so Moniqo simply removes it outright rather than keeping an empty placeholder around.
Either way, from your perspective as a user the action is the same: select Archive, and the envelope is retired.
Steps
- Open the Envelopes page and find the envelope you want to retire.
- Select Archive on that envelope (available from the list view or the envelope’s detail page).
- Confirm the action.
Notes
- Archiving is different from the permanent delete flow (see Delete an Envelope Permanently), which is a separate, much more destructive action that also removes the envelope’s transactions.
- There’s no “unarchive” action beyond toggling Show archived to find it again; from there you can modify it and continue using it as if it were never archived.
Tips
- Archive envelopes you’re no longer funding rather than leaving them at zero: it keeps your active list focused on the categories you actually use this month.
- Before archiving, make sure any remaining allocated balance is where you want it. Consider moving it into another envelope first if it isn’t.
Common Mistakes
- Archiving an envelope expecting its history to disappear. Archiving hides an envelope from your active list; it doesn’t delete its transactions or remove it from past reports. Use Delete an Envelope Permanently if you genuinely want its transactions gone.
